Future Proof’s first solo exhibition, hidden in plain site, acts as a survey as well as a physical manifestation of Future Proof’s primary ideologies and past curatorial projects.

Ranging from Esoteric tropes, Hollywood propaganda and other sorts of Capitalistic endeavors, hidden in plain site attempts to expose the hidden framework that catapults modern society’s mass cultural attitude toward 21st century living.

Through text, sculpture and sound, the works function as a metaphor toward the relationship popular culture has with itself and the conspiracy-driven theories concerning it as a tool of manipulation.

Future Proof is a collective curatorial duo which consists of Jabari Walker and Patrick Cruz. The curatorial duo was established in a post-apocalyptic suburban basement exactly when the Mayan Calendar occurred on the 21st of December, 2012. Their multifaceted practice involves curating, collaborating, writing, smoking, cooking and most recently art production. Future Proof has recently screened “investigations” at VIVO Media Arts Centre and has organized four extensive group exhibitions of various emerging artists at Dynamo Arts Association. The collective will also participate in a curatorial residency at the Hammock Residency which will culminate in an outdoor exhibition and BBQ reception this summer.

After a good spring cleaning, what do you do with the things you almost can’t bear to get rid of?

Project Space is seeking your gently loved vintage or well-made clothing, housewares, dishes, furniture, books, artworks or houseplants, which Michael Lee and Sonja Farrell will curate and arrange into a month-long pop-up shop from May 10 to June 2, 2013. All proceeds from the sale will support Project Space’s upcoming redesign in Summer 2013 and any unused or leftover donations will be passed on to another community organization.

Drop-offs will be accepted on Sundays in April (14, 21, 28) or by emailing info@projectspace.ca to set up an appointment.

Lost & Found Market will run May 10 to June 2, 2013, with an Opening Night event May 10 at 8pm.

Project Space is hiring Spring interns/co-op students!

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Project Space’s interns and co-op students are responsible for—

• Running Project Space during shop hours
• Assisting with management of the bookshoop, events and projects (including the Vancouver Art/Book Fair 2013)
• Helping to maintain the space
• Projects, research or initiatives assigned based on the individual’s skill set and interest

QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate would be—

• passionate about art books and contemporary art, graphic design and/or literature
• reliable, highly organized, resourceful, self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to work independently
• experienced in working with the public and comfortable making conversation with customers/visitors to the space
• excellent at collaboration, cheerful and outgoing, with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn new things
• skilled at using Word, Excel, Google Docs and WordPress, and possibly database software, and is comfortable with learning new software
• non-profit, event coordination or retail experience would also be an asset
• skills such as writing, editing, photography, videography, graphic design, industrial design, web development or grant writing would also be assets

NOTE: Project Space is a 100% volunteer-run project. As such, this is an unpaid internship; however, the intern will be given the opportunity to produce an exhibition and/or publication, and will receive a discount on books, as well as mentoring and resources from Project Space’s Directors and network.

AD/JUST: Exhibition / Launch of Artists’ Books

Reception: Friday, April 5 at 8pm
Exhibition: April 4-7, 1pm to 5pm

AD/JUST is a three-day installation and pair of artists’ books by Baltimore artists Jackie Riccio and Zack Ingram. The project features site-specific works on paper that explore the artists’ opposing mechanisms of readjustment and assimilation after moving to a new environment. While Ingram’s works will focus on a recognition of absence and looking to the past, Riccio’s will act as an attempt to fill this void with something new in the present. Each will also produce a book that extends the project’s inquiry into our personal relationships with space and geographic location.

February 23, 2013 | 1pm to midnight

Join Project Space and Real Vancouver Writers’ Series for a one-day book sale fundraiser that will go from the afternoon until late, with sporadic short readings throughout the day and music later in the evening.

First editions

Many of these books will come from the collection of Sean Cranbury, an independent bookseller and host of Books on the Radio, who has collected many amazing and unique books over the years.

Sean, and others, are putting their books forward to raise funds to help Project Space continue operating as a hub for artists, writers and designers interested in publication and to help Real Vancouver in its transition into an official non-profit organization, with dreams of paying writers and supporting the community through new and interesting projects.

Real Vancouver Writers’ Series is a local, independently curated literary reading series featuring great writers from Vancouver and across Canada.

Negative Pages: Photographic Artists’ Books

Negative Pages will feature a selection of Vancouver-based artists experimenting with the form of the photographic artist’s book. Highlighting photographic imagery’s connections with experimental book forms, the exhibition will present a diverse range of contemporary approaches over a three-day book exhibition and sale, which will be accompanied by an exhibition of selected photographic works from the publications.

Printed Matter’s LA ART BOOK FAIR

The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA

Printed Matter presents the first annual LA Art Book Fair, from February 1-3, at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. An opening will be held on the evening of Thursday, January 31.

Free and open to the public, the LA Art Book Fair is a unique event for artists’ books, art catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines presented by 220 international presses, booksellers, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers from twenty-one countries.

Project Space is closed for the holidays from December 17, 2012 to January 17, 2013. You can still make a purchase by appointment during this time, by contacting info@projectspace.ca.
